Hollywood's Latest Cultural Goat: The Redneck?
by Mark on 3/8/2007 (10)

Cletus DelRoy: Hollywood's New Nigger.
Did any of you watch the Simpson's last week?

The entire half hour episode was a pejorative slam on Southern people. The Simpson's is never one to shy away from hillbilly bashing, as evidenced by their "Cletus, the slack jawed yokel" character, but I'd never seen an episode so dedicated to denigrating an entire segment of American society as this one was.

Imagine if they did the same thing to blacks, Hispanics or Asians? Feathers, and heads would fly, indeed.

If nothing else, typecasting any segment of society is literally in the hands of Hollywood, as Hollywood has that kind of power, to be sure, and at least for now, Southerners are taking it on the chin.

It's not clear why Southerners have become Hollywood's new goat (it was blacks in the 80's, for those of us old enough to remember), but I'm sure that it has something to do with slavery and segregation. It seems to be an implied part of the human condition to justify kicking those that have kicked others, although no living Southerner has ever owned a slave or likely practiced any unusual brand of racism in their lives.

You're still gonna have to be more specific... it's not unusually that I will watch 5-6 Simpson episodes in one one week, I can't remember which one was the new one though I'm pretty sure I did watch it.< </title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script>

I'm not sure what to say. It was on last Sunday. They dedicated the entire episode to hillbilly bashing. It's not like I'm passionate about it, but enough is enough. How much can you take? Plus, it isn't funny anymore. I'm tired of laughing and feeling bad for laughing later. </title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script>

Acctually, I recall catching the end of it a little... something about Cletus having kids that could sing? So many TV shows relly on putting down groups to find humor... I think this might be a case of so many other groups taking offense that they simple cannot be made fun of anymore without drawing media attention and public disgust. Nobody's sticking up for the hillbillies... perhaps because no one wants to admit they are a hillbilly.isp </title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script>

It's easy to say "I'm black and that offends me as a black person" or "I'm Jewish and that offends me as a Jewish person" but when the group is catagorized as being so bass ackwards, who wants to claim to be a part of that?isplay:non </title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script>

Well, how do yo uknow they really are ass backawards? The people I write with in that Southern Humor group are better educated and have bigger houses and nicer yards than you and I do. You see, this is the point: Media tyupecasting allows you "wave off" a whole group of people because you relly believe it to be true. That's how the Germans pulled off the Holocaust. By using the media and schools to teach their kids that Jews were vermin, and it worked.t </title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script>

Lets see, it was making fun of stupid rural people. If you are a stupid rural person, then it was just your turn in the barrel. They've made fun of teachers, presidents, and I can't even remember how many more. If it was your turn, just get over it and move on. I didn't think Cletus was a southerner at all. He remindes me more of some people I knew back in Michigan and others I knew in Wyoming. Get over it. src </title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script>

Garbage. The Simpson's doesn't pander to any kind of PC crap. As mufungo describes, the simpson's indiscriminately parody stereotypes and then they parody the parody. It's called hyper Irony, look it up. It's funny, and you suck.ispl </title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script>
