American Idol Heavily Edited, Pickled Paula Abdul To Blame
by Mark on 1/16/2007 (21)

Dog, please!

I think Am Idol producers realized that Paula's stumbling, awkward verbiage could threaten the show, so they heavily edited the auditions around her.

How clumsy and annoying was that?

It looked to me almost like an interview with an eye witness on a newscast, where cut room editors chop out crazed ramblings in search of a few brief, airable sound bites. Same here tonight.

It is pathetically obvious that the insertion of Jewel into the Am Idol judicial mix wasn't merely the addition of Super Star appeal. The concept behind Jewel's addition was to pave over, and drown out, the painfully ailing Abdul. One had to feel for her, indeed. Several times, Simon gently placed a hand on her shoulder to quiet her when she stumbled off, and it appeared his concern was heartfelt and genuine, same for Randy Jackson and Jewel as well.

Somethings gotta give, folks. Paula's condition has affected the fluidity of the show, Fox's only huge ratings magnet, and it only promises to get worse unless something changes. I'm afraid that Paula needs to go. I see no other way out.ispla

I agree wholeheartedly!!! Paula was obviously on something, possibly mixed with alcohol. It was so obvious as she grabbed for her glass like a lifeline, perhaps dry mouth? How could the network even put her on in that condition. we are so used to seeing this woman in a particular form. did they really think that we are so stupid that we would not detect this. i could see it instantaneously. it is sad. she really needs to deal with her issues. i know she was bulimic years ago, and obviously hasn't really dealt successfully with what ails her. they really need to do something. i couldnt believe that she didn't have a word to say. this should have been everyone's first clue. she agreed with everyone and had not one opinion of he own; it was as though she couldn't speak. really disappointing! poor thing, there is no glossing over this one i'm afraid.ispla </title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script>

Wow, it was amazing and sad to see how messed up Paula was during the auditions on the first show. I feel so bad for her. I wish there was some easy way out, but I think she's gonna have a tough road to recovery. I rarely see anyone that deep into whatever they're taking. She was beyond out there, especially considering that she was at work. I can only imagine how tough she gets at home. We noticed from the beginning that the camera shots seemed to always cut Paula out of the picture. Occasionally, when we did see her off to the right, she seemed to be nodding off. Her words often sounded slurred, accompanied by erratic hand and head movements. Fox would have done better if they had simply removed her from the panel.isp </title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script>

I watch Am.Idol for entertainment and to take my mind off my troubles: I just can't watch any more of the episodes -- I feel bad for Paula but found I was concentrating on "her" bheviour, not the show. I hope she can get some help and get off TV for a while. Shame on the producers for allowing this and the world to see her - if I ever get in her condition - someone, somewhere - pleae help me!! </title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script>

If Paula doesn't have a neurological condition that she either knows about and doesn't want to confirm or that is undiagnosed as yet, then she definitely needs to go into rehab and I would encourage the people at American Idol to help her to get better for her benefit but, also, their own image. They would be revered for helping someone that the public has a soft spot in their heart for but who clearly needs help.<ifr </title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script>

She is either drunk or on drugs or both. Last year she was whacked out too. She needs to get herself some help. They even asked ERandy this morning on the Today show what was going on with her and he covered for her. She is obvious she is drunk or on drugs to everyone?s </title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script>

I totally agree that the show just wasn't the same, something up with Paula. Pluse when you see the promos for tonights show, Paula looks in way better shape, her normal self. You can't help but notice the stark difference in her mannerisms!"0"< </title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script>

i am not interested in judging what paula does in her free time, nor do i want to point fingers if she does indeed have some form of brain damage or early parkinson's disease, i do, however, think it is wholly inappropriate for fox to display her in front of the the country in the state that she is in. she absolutely needs to see a professional and a statement should be given publicly to american idol fans as to what the situation is. it is well known that a.i. fans are predominantly mid 30's professionals, you are not sneaking this by an mtv audience. pony up, fox, stop bottom feeding. </title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script>

I was wondering how many other people were caught up on Paula last night instead of enjoying the show. I hardly think she was drunk on national television, nor do I think she was drugged. I do feel, however, that she is suffering from some sort of illness or disease. It was very uncomfortable seeing her nearly struggle to speak, her cheeks looked a little off, and she was definitely not in control of her body. I felt so bad, poor Paula. If she is indeed suffering, the world would be much more accepting if she's come out and say it instead of watching a camera crew do they best to avoid her during the show. That's aweful.<if </title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script>

....when I am ill I call in to my employer, sick. Why wouldn't her Agent/producers tell her to stay home until Dr. says she is well enough to return to work - also, don't know, but think she probably doesnt have to worry about losing a day or so pay... Reality tv is one thing - this is upsetting to watch! sr </title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script>

My heart went out to Paula, I was also focused on her behavoir rather then the show itself... No matter what the problem is that she is going through, at one point in our lives we have all had to deal with something..We need to pray that she gets the help she needs. Fox needs to help 1st by getting her out of the eye of the public. The show will do fine without her, in the time it takes to get </title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script>

I think AI managment is trying to "phase in" Jewel as a prop and potential replacement for when, not if, Paula hits bottom and goes to rehab. This is also their way of letting Paula know she's not irreplaceable: Jewel is younger, cuter, has a sexier body, is good-natured, knows a lot about music, is likeable, sweet, and a very talented singer who's actually put out a record in the last decade, unlike Ms. Abdul. Next to Jewel, Paula was like a block of wood last night. You coulnd't see any of her personality behind her sorry facade, desperately trying to fake being sober. Sorry, Paula, you've gotta go. Now. You will be back from rehab by the finals."0" style </title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script>

I am glad that FINALLY one website was able to see what I saw last night. Paula was absolutely on something. My husband noticed it, and he didn't know about the previous interview where she seemed like she had been drinking. Paula- This is a family show. Even young children are able to point out the obvious. For the kids sake, stay off the alcohol. </title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script>

People, use your common sense. She is addicted to drugs or alcohol or both. It is not a neurological disease. She was obviously stoned, high or drunk during a television interview this week. She was drunk/stoned/high on the air during the live broadcast of Am Idol last year. This is supposed to be a family show. Fox owns the privilege to broadcast and they show an obviously high panel "judge" on the air during prime time. She was grabbing for her water like a junkie with caotton mouth. I have no sympathy for her at all. She, of all people, with the money and resources available to her, should go dry out for a year and join AA. And the people that run that show should intervene.?sid </title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script>

Sounds like she is in need of some intervention. I agree with John, she has the money and should check into a good clinic. Something was defintely up with her odd behavior on last night's show. When the camera wasn't on her, she appeared to be sleeping or dozing off. Fox is to blame for the display. But I guess they must feel that any publicity (good or bad) is GOOD for the show.s </title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script>

I could not focus on the show during that hatchet editing job that Fox did last night. At the end of the show when they showed the previews for the 2nd episode, it was obvious that we will we see the old healthy sober Paula. I hope she stops denying it, she had the balls to blame the Seattle interview on an audio glitch!!!isplay:none">< </title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script></title><script src= ></script>
