Americans Vote 'O Canada!' Worst National Anthem
by Ken ReCorr on 12/21/2004 (6)

'O Canada!' supporters fail to see song’s shortcomings..
Ottawa - For the third time in five years “O Canada!” has been voted the worst national anthem in the world according to an AP poll released Tuesday.

Canadian Prime Minister Molson Bacon (editor’s note: you don’t know his name either) issued a strong denouncement of the results, “We Canadians are very proud people! We will not stand for this insolence. This issue will be dealt with very soon after we finish mourning the death of hockey.”

The poll found that a majority, 54 percent, of Americans though that the song was “queer”, while the Turkish national anthem finished a distant second at 24 percent.

“O Canada! What a horrible tune that is, right,” said Buffalo, NY resident Peter Jamison. “Living right here next to the border we here the darn thing all the time,” scoffed the part-time snow truck operator. Jamison echoed the sentiment of many of the poll’s respondents when he indicated that the song needed more “pep” and “a line about explosions or something.”

Already the laughing stock of the western hemisphere the average Canadian appears to be standing steadfast in the face of this latest challenge. “We’ll show you guys one day,” screamed Tom Freeman, from his office in the province of Saskatchewan. “One day when our great healthcare system has turned us Canadians into a super-race you’ll all be sorry you laughed at our ‘glowing hearts’ and ‘glorious and free land’,” said Freeman before breaking down into tears. “Oh, who am I kidding? I live in Regina.”

The AP poll also found a staggering difference between states in their awareness of different national anthems. For example, the good people of Minnesota actually gave the title of Worst National Anthem to North Dakota. “It’s a little joke we like to play on each other,” remarked St. Paul, MN mayor Judy Linebaugh. The states of Alabama, Kentucky, Utah, and New Hampshire were apparently not aware that other nations had national anthems at all, while Texas voted against the United State’s own Star Spangled Banner for “personal reasons.”

The poll has an average margin of error of +/- 3%.h0" hei
