Less than ten months ago, Plaxico Burress was the toast of New York. He played in a key role in the Giant's improbable win over the undefeated Patriots. He received a fat new contract this offseason to the tune of $7 million a year. And now one nightclub incident this past Saturday has completely reversed his fortunes.
"Shooting myself in the leg was a bad idea," Burress told Smooth Operator. "Buying a kitten for a starving family, helping an old lady learn to skateboard, buying alcohol for teenagers, punching a bear in the nose and then running away... those would all have been good ideas."
Burress has now been charged with two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, which would result in a prison sentence of a minimum 3 1/2 years to a maximum 15 years if convicted. New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg is demanding justice, saying that it would be an outrage "if we didn’t prosecute to the fullest extent of the law".
It is possible that Burress's team could also deactivate him, suspend him, cut him, or trade him to 0-12 Detroit because of his actions.
"If I had to do it over again, I would definately not have shot myself in the leg," said Burress. "It seemed like a good idea at the time, but I know now clearly it was not."
